Game Rules and Hand Values
Baccarat is a card game where players compete against the dealer by predicting which hand—Player, Banker, or Tie—will achieve a total closest to nine. Understanding hand values is fundamental to developing effective strategy. Card values are straightforward: numbered cards 2-9 retain their face value, while 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings count as zero. Aces count as one.
The game begins with two cards dealt to both the Player and Banker hands. If either hand totals 8 or 9, this is called a "natural," and no additional cards are drawn. The hand closest to nine wins. This simplicity makes baccarat accessible while the mathematical probabilities create strategic depth.
The third card rule adds complexity to gameplay. If neither hand achieves a natural, additional cards may be drawn following specific guidelines. The Player hand draws a third card if their total is 5 or less. The Banker's decision to draw depends on multiple factors including the Player's third card and the Banker's current total.
